Shocked by this news and so sorry I did not know in time to attend his funeral. Don and I worked together at Giant Food and shared so many life stories and solutions for what was wrong and right with the world today. A gentle man with a heart of gold and full of faith. He enriched the life of anyone who knew him. Don, thank you for your friendship. Rest in peace. You will always be remembered.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your whole family. Life is just way to short and needs to be enjoyed each and every day. He was way to young. My love to all.

Our Moms met at Petworth Methodist Church in DC in the 1930's. Our Dads played baseball against each other in high school in West Virginia when Berkeley Springs played Great Cacapon. So that made the Lutman kids cousins with the Farris boys. We have fond memories of time spent at their house in Adelphi and at our cabin and their farm in West Virginia. We will remember Donnie as a kind, soft spoken, easy going man who loved his family, his friends and his country. Our hearts will be with you tomorrow Bobby and Kenny. We love you guys--always have.

I'm so sorry to hear of Don's passing. He was a kind, sensible, and gentle man, always one for a good conversation back in our days at Giant HQ, and with a continued "friendship" on FB.
Know that I'm praying for his family - for comfort and peace - during this difficult season. God bless you. ♥

I have had the honor of knowing Don Farris all my life as his mother and my mother were life long best friends. He was a soft spoken, gentle man who will be missed by everyone who knew him and loved him as I did. Don was 10 years older than I was and he was always my hero as long as I can remember. To a 10 year old in the sixties anyone with a 67 Corvette and a Harley was my hero. Then Don went to Vietnam and became a helicopter pilot and became my hero all over again when he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism. He and his crew made repeated landings in a hot LZ under intense enemy fire to rescue wounded Marines. I believe he rescued over 70 Marines that day... but I could tell he never really felt comfortable wearing the label of hero... in spite of the fact he was now in an elite club of hero's...
Later in life I was fortunate to be able to work with Don for several years in IT. I saw a different side of my friend and coworker as I watched him overcome the professional and personal challenges we all face in life. I learned the make of a man is not measured by the medal on his chest... but the metal in his heart. Don Farris was fortunate enough to have had both. We should all be so lucky to have a Don Farris in our life. I know I am... and I am a better man for it. And yes he is still my hero! The only difference is now when I look up to him... its because I know he is in heaven. Rest in peace my friend.

I had the privilege of working with Don at Giant Food in the IT Dept. We especially bonded since we are both Vietnam Era vets. Very saddened by this unexpected, sudden loss of a very nice guy. His bravery as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and his outstanding support of Veterans (doing Honor flight escorts to WWII memorial, etc) are to be respected and admired greatly. My sympathy to all his family and friends.
