Irving had a profound impact on me when I studied with him in Bennington College and I took every class that he offered! I continued taking 1:1 tutorials up until my very last semester because I learnt so much from him in every class!
He offered me valuable lessons in life, but most importantly he taught me kindness and to treat everyone with respect!

So sorry to read about Dr. Irving's passing. After I graduated from Columbia I spent a year working in his lab at Flower Fifth.
Just, on a whim, looked him up on google, and was saddened to realize how close to him I live in Lanesborough, MA. One of my sons attended Camp Mohawk, which is just down the road from us. I am very sorry I never got to reconnect with him.

Irving was an incredible human being who had a tremendous impact on me well beyond the immunology classes that I took with him. It was a privilege to have studied under him at Bennington College for 2 years. My condolences to his family and loved ones. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Irving Rappaport was iconic to me. In 1986-87 he convinced me that monoclonal antibodies would be a better way of characterizing neurons IF it were possible to generate such antibodies. We embarked on the task of producing monoclonal antibodies in the visual system of a fish, and we came out with 20 specific markers for retinal ganglion cells in the eye. With Irving’s help, we ended up writing two papers. During this period I got to know him well, and arguing about vast numbers of topics with him was always fun. That period of my career was greatly influenced by Irving. His loss is sad to bear.
