Mavis Emelda Carty Thwaites, 93, of Hyattsville, Maryland went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Maryland following health conditions associated with a brief illness.
Mavis was born on March 30th, 1924 the daughter of Beresford and Lena Lewis Carty.  As a devout Catholic, she took great pride in playing hymns on the piano and singing soprano in her parish choir.  She was also an expert seamstress, working for the Hodgskinsons company and was renowned in her community for her sewing skills. In her 44th year, Mavis bravely came to the United States to be with her children and pave the way for a better future.  Mavis took great pride in working and retiring from the legendary Woodward & Lothrop in Washington DC. She continued to serve the Lord through continued service to her community.  She spent many years volunteering in her community by working with special needs children at James Dockworth Elementary School of Beltsville, Maryland. Grandma Mavis, called by many in the Trinidadian community was devoted to her family and faith.  She touched everyone that knew her with her grace, class, and desire to live a life full of the Holy Spirit and devotion to the Lord our savior.
"So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy" ~ John 16:22
