Chi Tran

John the Baptist Chi V. Tran was born on July 20th, 1944 in That Khe Lang Son, Northern Vietnam. He was the eldest of 11 children to parents Mr. Sung V. Tran and Mrs. Tam T. Co.  In 1954, when he was 10 years old, he and his family fled to Saigon, South Vietnam to seek freedom from the North Vietnamese Communist Regime. 

After graduating from Chu Van An High School in Saigon, he joined the South Vietnamese Air Force as a Lieutenant on 12/24/1964 Class of 65A SVSQ/KQ/VNCH. 

In 1965, at the height of the Vietnam war, he was sent to the United States for military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.  In 1967, Chi returned to Vietnam to serve in the Vietnamese Air Force as Captain of Pyramid Radar Control in Ban Me Thuot, where he met his first wife. Together they had three sons, Phong, Phi, and Phuong. 

In 1971, he served as a Captain in charge of Paris, Tan Son Nhat Air Base and then in 1972, he was promoted to Second in Command Captain of the Radar Station in Son Tra, Da Nang, Central part of Vietnam until the last day of the fall of Vietnam in April 30th 1975. Chi was captured by the North Vietnamese Army while he was controlling the Radar Control Tower in Son Tra, Da Nang. He was kept in the Communist Concentration Camp prison for 7 years before being released in April 1982.  He returned to Saigon and lived a normal civilian life and taught English.  

On May 1990, he arrived to Beltsville, Maryland under the Humanitarian Program for former political detainees and proudly became an American Citizen at the age of 51. Chi had many occupations from working as a Vietnamese Interpreter, helping those in the Vietnamese community study for their citizenship as well for different professional licenses. Chi enjoyed traveling, spending time with friends and family, and most of all his love for music, singing and dancing.

Chi passed away on February 20th, 2018 in Westminster, Maryland.  He is survived by his three sons Phong, Phi, Phuong and their mother, Chin Thi Nguyen, his wife, Ai-Nghia Tran, grandsons Quan Anh, Bao, Austin and Michael, granddaughters Vy and Kelsey.   Brothers Hoang Minh Tran and family, Minh Hoang Tran and Family.  Sisters Hai T. Tran and family, Thu T. Tran (predeceased) and son, Dung T. Tran and family, Hanh T.Tran and family, Hong T. Tran and family, Kim Trang Tran and family, Tuyet Nga Tran and family, Thuy Anh Tran and family and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
