Leonard A. Bartels, Ret. Army Major
Leonard was born July 31, 1936 in Strawberry Point, Iowa. He was stationed in Iran, Turkey, and Korea and served in the Vietnam War (1968-69). He was also stationed at numerous Army bases throughout the United States; Ft Lesley J. McNair, Washington DC, Ft Bragg, NC, Ft. Belvoir, VA, Ft Myers, VA, Ft Benjamin Harrison, IN and Ft Ord in Monterey, CA. He spent 20 years in the Army and retired with the rank of Major in 1977. After his retirement he took a civilian job in 1978 in Tehran, Iran. After arriving in Tehran in the summer of 1978 he and his family found themselves in the middle of the Iranian revolution. Early in 1979 the family returned to the United States. Several years later in 1982, he then pursued a career with the federal government and retired as the Official Mail Manager for DOD in 2003. He was an avid train lover and collected stamps. He also enjoyed reading, traveling the world and spending time with his friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Anahid Bartels, his sons, William and his wife, Susan, Ronald and his wife, Patricia, Richard and his wife, Linda and Aris; seven grandchildren, Alexandra, Zachary, Tyler, Tommy, Brandyn, Tiffany and Kimberly; 2 brothers, David and Merlin Bartels, 3 nieces and 8 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Elmer and his first wife, Hedik.
