Edward J. “Eddie” Scarcia passed from this world on November 5, 2025, dying of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his father “Big Eddie,” his mother Anthrene (“Gigi’), and his sister Leslie. He is survived by his brother Jeffrey and his sisters Lori and Janie, as well as three nieces, six nephews, four grand-nieces and four grand-nephews.
To his many friends and relatives, Eddie was known as a tireless worker, a man of true generosity, and a soul who deeply loved children.
He poured and finished concrete in the Washington DC area for more than 60 years, the vast majority of those years working beside his father at the company they proudly owned—E. Scarcia and Son Corporation. Eddie was an expert concrete finisher and also did beautiful work in brick and custom stone. The impact of his work remains today in thousands of homes, schools, churches, warehouses, sidewalks, patios and driveways throughout Washington, suburban Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Over the years, in the summer months, he shared his trade with his nephews Luke, Ross, Tommy, Michael and Doug. He never missed a day of work and never walked away from a job that wasn’t perfect. No man ever outworked Eddie Scarcia.
His generosity was an almost unbelievable thing to behold. He would gladly cash his entire paycheck and spend it all on meals for his family and friends. At Ocean City, year after year for decades, he would pay for amazing crab feasts for his parents, brothers and sister, in-laws, and all the nieces and nephews. Eddie got the biggest and best crabs, the jumbo shrimp in huge numbers, and the best cream of crab soup on the Eastern shore. He was a man of a very kind temperament, but one thing he would not tolerate was someone trying to help pay the bill. This joy—this immeasurable generosity—was one of many ways Eddie showed his love for his family.
Eddie loved food, especially Italian food, and he was lucky to have the best cook on earth—his mother GiGi—prepare so many of the meals he enjoyed in his lifetime. He enjoyed the occasional beer. He was a very neat dresser who took great pride in his appearance. But his most shining characteristic was his love of children.
We have so many memories of Eddie with his nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. The children awoke in him a wonder, a kind of beautiful simplicity, a renewal of the child within him, which was truly of divine origin. He wasn’t content to simply hold a child for a few minutes then return his attention to the game on television. Eddie was always on the floor, crawling around, putting them on his back, setting up the amazing train set he built for them. He was always playing at their level. Instinctively, they could sense his warmth, authenticity, and deep love for them. And they returned this love year after year after year.
He graduated Holy Redeemer Catholic School, Berwyn, Maryland in 1964 and High Point High School, Beltsville, Maryland, in 1968.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
