Hugh Birttie O'Donnell, III, a devoted husband, dedicated professional, and cherished member of his community, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, at Contee Estate Assisted Living in Laurel, Maryland. Born on April 9, 1937, in Quincy, Illinois, Hugh's life was marked by unwavering commitment to family, faith, and service.
Hugh graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, in 1955, laying the foundation for a life rich in learning and achievement. His thirst for knowledge led him to the University of Maryland, College Park, where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1973. This accomplishment was a testament to his perseverance and dedication.
His sense of duty extended beyond education into military service, where he proudly served in the United States Army. After his service, Hugh devoted 27 years of his career to the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, retiring in April 2001. His work there reflected his passion for innovation and his commitment to advancing space exploration.
Faith played a central role in Hugh's life. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Prince George's County Council #2809, exemplifying his dedication to charitable works and community involvement. Additionally, he was a steadfast member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Beltsville, Maryland, where his spirituality and kindness touched many lives.
Above all, Hugh was a loving husband to Marian O'Donnell, with whom he shared more than 54 wonderful years of marriage. He is also survived by his sister, Kathi Nieman, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Hugh’s journey was one marked by resilience, love, and service. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him, leaving a lasting imprint of compassion, dedication, and grace. He will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered as a man who lived fully and loved deeply.
