Jagadisan G.S. Mani

February 1, 1933 — August 28, 2025

Jagadisan Ganapathi Subramanian Mani, also known as J. G. S. Mani, suddenly passed away on August 28, 2025, in Olney, Maryland.

Jagadisan G. S. Mani was born in Madras, the capital of the Presidency of Fort St. George, a major administrative subdivision of British India or the British Raj. He grew up in an extended family home that included his mother (Seetha Lakshmi Ammal), father (Jagadisan Iyer), and siblings; his uncle’s (Muthukrishnan’s) family; his aunt and some others. There were around 13 very social people in the household. As a consequence, our father was an extremely outgoing individual, who liked to be surrounded by a large group of people.

He studied at Ramakrishna Mission School and Presidency College in Madras, then moved to Bombay for his first job with the Indian Government. He then returned to Madras and got married to K. Saroja, who gave him three sons.

During his working life in India, he moved all-round the Indian state of Maharashtra as a member of the Indian civil service. He subsequently journeyed with his family to the USA as a result of an overseas posting by the Indian Government, to the Indian Embassy in Washington DC. After several years at the Indian Embassy, he switched to the World Bank. He retired from the World Bank at the age of 65 and spent his retirement living in Lanham, MD, and traveling around the world. He loved to travel.

He was a pioneer in so many ways. A man with great dreams and the zeal to realize them. He is survived by Saroja Mani; his three sons: Ravi Mani, Ramesh Ganapathi Mani, and Raghu Ganapati Mani; his three grandchildren: Shankar Mani, Priya Mani, and Lakshmi Uma-Kirthica Mani; and a large extended family. He will be missed by one and all.
