The son of Henry L. and Evelyn C. Brown was born, 2nd youngest of 9 children, in Pensacola, Florida, on December 21, 1929. At the age of 96 years, he transitioned on December 31, 2025, resting peacefully and awaiting his Savior-Jesus Christ's 2nd Coming.

He was raised as a Seventh-day Adventist by his parents, who were leaders in their church. In 1976, Sendry was baptized at the Wheaton SDA Church (now Renewed SDA Church). He always upheld the beliefs of the church and shared them with his family & friends.

His primary & secondary education was in the Pensacola, Florida school system. After entering the military, he completed two years of college and took many classes for which he expanded his knowledge base and ability to pursue new opportunities.

He enlisted into the segregated Army in 1947 and served in the U.S. Army for over 21 years, serving in places that included Germany, France, South Korea, West Africa (Liberia), the Pentagon, and Walter Reed AMC, where he retired in 1968. Sendry’s MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) was in the medical field.

Upon Army retirement, Sendry developed & owned a regional freight delivery business, Pittman's Freight Service for 31 years. He had contracts with major companies like Speigel, IBM, Amtrak, JCPenneys, Polygram Records, Nabisco, Timex & more. He used this business to take care of his family and show his 5 sons the value of hardwork, perseverance and entrepreneurship.

Upon relocating to Newport News, VA, he volunteered as the American Red Cross coordinator for the McDonald Army Health Center. Due to his diligent service and mentorship, the program was re-named in his honor: The "Sendry O. Pittman Volunteer Program ( https://mcdonald.tricare.mil/About-Us/Sendry-Pittman-Volunteer-Program ). He enjoyed helping others.

He was a stickler for organization and punctuality. Sendry worked hard to provide for his family, ensuring they had the necessities of life: food, clothing, shelter, education & opportunities. But he liked to have fun too.

Sendry’s pastime was playing golf and watching it on TV. He acquired his knowledge of the game as a teenager when he caddied for golfers in Pensacola, Florida. One of his highlights was when he played golf with Billy Eckstine and Adam Clayton Powell when they served at a military post.

The most joyful experience in his life, other than marrying Doris, was the1984 trip to the Holy Land. To walk where Jesus walked. The Sabbath was celebrated on a boat in the middle of the Sea of Galilee. The tour was with Pastor George Vandeman and Mark Finley, who asked Sendry to read the scripture. Another memorable experience was having communion in the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem.

Sendry became a member of the Mt. Calvary SDA Church in Williamsburg. Through his service, he became the Head Deacon. More than one morning, he would put on his coveralls, grab his toolbox, and go to church to fix or see what needed to be done. He also served on the Church Board.

He leaves behind his wife Doris (Harris) Pittman of over 63 years and five sons: Sendry II (Charissa), Henry, Michael, Ray (Rose), and Damon (Courtney). He is also survived by his grandchildren Nizar, Leland, Ashley, Devin, Wesley, Shelby, Chelsea (deceased), Raquel, Rebekah, Jacob, Isaiah, and two great-grandsons, Stefan and Tristan. He is also survived by his many nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as his in-laws Mary Harris, Noble Harris, Harold Harris, and Hebert (Bill) Long.

Sendry was the last survivor of his parents and 8 siblings.
