It is with great sadness that the family of Carlton “Woody” Duncan Woodell Jr., age 76, of Elkridge, Maryland passed away peacefully on January 24, 2021 at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, Maryland.

It is with great sadness that the family of Carlton “Woody” Duncan Woodell Jr., age 76, of Elkridge, Maryland passed away peacefully on January 24, 2021 at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, Maryland.

Woody was born December 5, 1944 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Carlton “Woodie” Duncan Woodell Sr. and Thelma Jean Woodell (nee Reynolds).  He was the born into a military family and for the first twenty years of his life lived on military bases in many U.S. states, Japan, Hawaii (before statehood) and Germany.  Over the years he met and became close friends with numerous people.  Many of whom he stayed in contact with until his passing.

It was in Munich Germany where he completed high school and then enrolled in The University of Maryland University College. While in college he met many lifelong friends and over the years he attended many reunions with his Munich Alumni friends, in Maryland, New Orleans and in Munich.  He took a special pride in working for and with the Munich Alumni groups, for which he took on the roles of photographer, website developer and archiver of records.

In 1964, when his father retired from the army, the family settled in Beltsville, Maryland.  Woody enrolled in the University of Maryland where completed his studies in accounting. While in Maryland he participated in extracurricular activities, such as playing the French Horn in the University’s marching band. He loved music and developed an eclectic taste in music. He had a passion for photography.  In addition, he enjoyed reading novels, fishing, playing bridge, cribbage and having an occasional mug of beer with friends.

In between college and work Woody enrolled in the U.S. Navy where he served as a radioman on the ‘USS Newport News’, a Des Moines-class heavy cruiser based out of Norfolk, Virginia.  During his tour of duty they patrolled off the coast of North Vietnam, periodically engaging the enemy both taking and retuning fire.  When his enlistment was over Woody began his career in accounting.  He worked as the accountant for a number of hotels in the Washington D.C. area.  Soon after he worked as an accountant for a firm in Lorton, Virginia.  In 2004, Woody moved to Elkridge, Maryland and started work as a C.P.A. at the firm of Frobenius, Conway & Company, where he worked until his passing.

He is predeceased by his mother Jean, his father Woodie, and his sister Jane E. Plummer (nee Woodell).  He is survived by his brother Anthony Woodell of Orlando, Florida and his sister Katherine Vagnoni (nee Woodell) of Beltsville, Maryland.  In addition, he is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will be missed by all.

A small family service will take place at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Maryland on February 8, 2021.  In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in his memory be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
