Marjorie Sleeman Obituary

Marjorie E. Sleeman passed peacefully, surrounded by family, the evening of July 26, only weeks after the discovery that she had lung cancer. Born in Mississippi on February 13, 1932, Marjorie’s family moved to various southern states before landing in Georgia where she spent the remainder of her youth. Marjorie is predeceased by her husband of 57 years, John R. Sleeman, Sr. (2011), survived by her children Ruth S. Marino, John R. Sleeman, Jr., Jacquelyn M. Sleeman (Karl-Erik Engstrom), Mary Ellen Conley (Bryan), Valerie J. Robbins (Jim), Mark G. Sleeman (Jennifer), grandchildren - John A. Marino, Jr.; Robert, Ryan, and Timothy Sleeman; Athena Torres; Melissa, April & Julia Conley; Savanah May; Melanie and Stephanie Robbins; and Alex Sleeman; and eleven great-grandchildren.

In addition to being a wife and a mother of six children, Marjorie worked at the General Conference of Seventh Day Adventists, Risk Management for 25 years, retiring in 2000. When she wasn’t working, she was sewing clothing and brides maids dresses, (and at least one wedding dress), learning how to decorate cakes to the point of creating many wonderful birthday and elaborate wedding cakes, knitting and crocheting afghans, needlepoint, gardening in our Beltsville home of 55 years, painting or drawing, camping with “the Happy Wanderers” group of camping friends and family, serving at Sligo Seventh Day Adventist Church as deaconess, acquiring her ham radio license, and traveling with her best friend and husband John. Mom was a loving friend, sweet mother, and devoted wife. She is already missed greatly.

The family plans to have a memorial service at Sligo Seventh Day Adventist church in mid-September when Jackie returns to the States.
