Mary Lorraine Mapes, born November 21, 1958, in Fort Meade, MD, passed away peacefully in her home on October 20, 2023.
Born into a military family, Mary spent much of her childhood traveling the United States and Europe, early experiences which fostered her characteristic appreciation and acceptance of the differences in other people and cultures.
After her family settled in Maryland, Mary graduated from High Point High School in Beltsville, MD, then entered a lifelong career in civic work, ultimately dedicating 26 years of service to the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, where she was adored by co-workers for her relentless positivity and her eagerness to lend an ear or a hand – and a vibrant smile – to anyone in need.
In her free time, Mary devoted herself to helping others and bringing people together: she organized annual charity fundraisers, hosted regular game nights at home with friends, and seized any special occasion imaginable to plan a celebration with her family (among whom she was affectionately called by her middle name, “Lorraine”).
Mary is survived by her children, Christina DiSilvestre, Joshua Mapes, Michael Mapes, Kaitlyn Baker, and Glax Baldwin; grandchildren Zachary Beasley and Jaxson Gray; mother, Frieda Hartley; brothers Chuck Hartley and Mark (Mary) Hartley; sister, Teresa Hartley; nieces and nephews, Randy, Kara, Charlie, Bill, Sarah, Lisa, and Stephanie; as well as her many beloved friends and extended family members. She is preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Hartley; her grandson, Justin Beasley, Jr., brother, Michael Hartley; sister, Heidi Hawkins; and niece, Christen Hawkins.
