Douglas Pitmon Keys was born January 12, 1935, and passed peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, August 23, 2025.
He was born at Columbia Woman’s Hospital in Washington DC and grew up in Brentwood, Maryland. He met Myra Lindley when he was 19 years old and they married when he was 20. He was a brother to David, Woodrow and Gentsia, all who passed before him. He was dad to five children: Kevin Keys, Kathy Saunders, Karen Bowers, Kelly Keys and Krystal Picazo; father-in-law to Lori Keys and Chuck Bowers. He was grandad to 16 grandchildren: Joshua, Jamie, David, Alicia, Alex, Kellee, Chad, Melissa, Jeremy, Tyce, Elaine, Kade, Shannon, Kaitlyn, Daniel and Jonathan. He was a great grandfather to 22 great grandchildren: Melora, Toby, Davy, Grayson, Luca, Livvy, Kai, Michaela, AJ, Colton, Beckett, Everlee, Brooklynne, Parker, Kensi, Avery, Simeon, Naomi, Junia, Shepherd, Aidan, and Anna.
Over the years his jobs included welding work for race cars and welding for a machine shop, truck driving, van driving for Riverdale Baptist School (where he worked to help put his kids through private school) and running a food truck for the last working years of his career life. During his welding years, Doug sometimes participated in drag races himself and supported mom’s participation in the powder puff drag races also!
In retirement he zealously took up a hobby and livelihood that involved collecting and selling and working on toys of various kinds, but most especially slot cars and hot wheels. He had over 2000 slot cars!
Doug loved God and served Him for decades in a variety of ways, including faithful visitation, Sunday School teacher, children’s church director, vacation Bible school worker, and more. He is now in the presence of Jesus and walking on streets of gold. Don’t you wonder what he is living right now?!
