Wayne D. Bridegum

September 27, 1941 — July 27, 2025

Wayne D. Bridegum, 83, of Hyattsville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, following a brief hospital stay. Born on September 27, 1941, to Earl Bridegum and Evelyn (Mosgrave) Bridegum, Wayne’s life was a testament to dedication, love, and service.

Wayne is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Bernice M. (Foust) Bridegum, who was his childhood sweetheart and lifelong partner. Together, they raised a family who brought him immense pride and joy: Susan J. (Bridegum) Nyce and her husband Peter Q. Nyce III; Jeffrey W. Bridegum and his wife Debi Bridegum; and Mark A. Bridegum and partner Darlene Jones.

A cherished grandfather, Wayne’s legacy continues through his grandchildren: Daniel Bridegum (married to Jessica Scadron Bridegum), Clifton Bridegum (married to Melissa Lowry Bridegum), Melissa Bridegum, Mathew Nyce, Stephen Nyce, David Bridegum, and Brooke Bridegum. His love extended to his great-grandchildren—Lilly Gilmore, Ray Gilmore, Cole Bridegum, Colt Bridegum, Letty Sanchez, Amanda Bridegum, and Cora Bridegum—each of whom brought him immeasurable happiness.

Wayne was preceded in death by his siblings William Bridegum, Harry Bridegum, David Bridegum, and Sarah Jane Bridegum.

A proud 1958 graduate of Berlin Brothers Valley High School in Berlin, Pennsylvania, Wayne first met Bernice in the innocence of first grade—a love story that endured a lifetime. His sense of duty led him to serve for many years as a supervisor in the HVAC systems at the U.S. Capitol, working under the Architect of the Capitol—a career marked by quiet strength and steadfast responsibility.

Faith was the cornerstone of Wayne’s life. He devoted countless hours to his church, maintaining its building and serving faithfully on the church council. Even after his passing, Wayne’s generosity lives on through his selfless decision to be a tissue donor, helping others in need.

Wayne was affectionately known as the family’s “go-to fixer”—a man who could repair anything, from furnaces and lawnmowers to walls and basement floors. His hands were rarely still, always working to improve the world around him. He is fondly remembered for his deep faith, his love of basketball (earning the nickname “Whitey” on the court), his enthusiasm for watching football, his passion for gardening, and above all, his unwavering devotion to his family—especially to Bernice, the heart of his world.

A celebration of Wayne’s life will take place at Hope Lutheran Church and Student Center, 4201 Knox Road, College Park, Maryland, on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private at the IOOF Cemetery in Berlin, Pennsylvania.

Wayne D. Bridegum’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him. His legacy of kindness, faith, and tireless service to others will be cherished always.
