Charles L. Hudson

On Monday, October 14, 2019 Charles L. Hudson, beloved husband of the late Ann (Leete) Hudson and dad to
three children, passed away.
Charley was born October 24, 1924 in Ironshire, MD to Charles Martin and Mabel (Dunlap) Hudson. They
moved to Snow Hill, MD when Lingo, as he was always known in the family, was 18 months. While working at
Maryland Park High School, Lingo met the love of his life, and married Ann Olivia Leete in 1947. Lingo worked
in the Prince George’s Public School System for 38 years as teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal.
Sports held a special place in Lingo’s life. He was a natural athlete, starting to play baseball early in life with his
father, and playing baseball and some soccer in high school and college. Lingo also played semi-pro baseball
for Snow Hill in the Central Shore League, as he could make more money in a weekend than in a whole month
of teaching! His only regret was not accepting Connie Mack’s offer to try out for the Philly’s farm team in the
early 1940’s, thinking he would ultimately have a better future as a teacher. He coached baseball, soccer,
wrestling, football, and basketball at the high school level, as well as being the basketball coach at Prince
George’s Community College for a number of years. If he wasn’t coaching, Lingo was refereeing basketball
games or umpiring baseball games. He was proud to have been a founding member of Board #134 of IAABO
(International Associates of Approved Basketball Officials), and was honored with lifetime memberships to
both this organization and also to the Metropolitan Baseball Umpires Association. It gave Lingo great pleasure
to have sold tickets for 70 years to the Maryland State High School Basketball Tournament held at the
University of Maryland. Finally, he was softball coach for the Riderwood retirement community team, winning
the championship in 2013.
Besides sports, Lingo had many interests including cards, trains, travel, civic responsibility, and his religion. The
sports competition didn’t stop on the field, as the Hudson clan was known for their rabid love of card games,
in which everyone took great pleasure whenever they could beat Lingo or his brothers! Lingo had a lifelong
fascination with trains and an extensive model train collection. His train tracks ran all over the house, including
one track that wove around the basement, behind the furnace, and across a door, so you had to duck to get
into the room! He so enjoyed running the trains for anyone interested, and of course, there was always a train
around the Christmas tree. Ann and Lingo traveled extensively, visiting roughly fifty countries spread over six
continents. He took great pride in touring all fifty states, and their state capitals, during visits to friends and
family. Additionally, he was proud of hosting three foreign exchange students, and kept up with them
throughout the years. Following his father’s example, Lingo served his community for eight years as town
councilor, and then as mayor. Along with Ann, he was a heartfelt member of Methodist churches their entire
married life, and taught Adult Religious Education Classes for over fifty years. Lingo loved telling stories to his
grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and they fondly remember the “Skillery, Scallery Alligator”. He also
loved playing games with them, a favorite being ”Huckle, Buckle Booster, I Found the Rooster”.
Lingo was preceded in death by his wife, Ann, his parents, his brother Kenneth, and niece Meredith. He is

survived by his children Charlie (Jan), Annilin (Peter), and Chris (Eileen), nine grandchildren, five great-
grandchildren, brothers Donald (Pauline) and, Gerald (Sharon), sister-in-law Nancy, and many beloved nieces

and nephews.
As his beloved wife, Ann, died September 10, 2019, there will be a joint memorial service at the Riderwood
Chapel on October 31, 2019 at 1 pm.
