I am so sad to hear of Betty’s passing. I met Betty at Somerford when my husband went there for respite care and continued to live there until his passing on Jan. 1, 2014. We developed a true friendship and I continued to keep in touch after my Bill passed and I sang/played the piano for your dad/her dear husband at his funeral service. It was such an honor to be there. I continued to call Betty after that for sometime. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Betty was such a dear person....she helped me during a very difficult time in my life. We would chat and help each other at Somerford and get together after that time also. Just know your mom was a very special person and I am so thankful that I was able to know her. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. She loved her children and her grandchildren so much......always talking about all of you with so much love!! My love to all of you, Mary Boyce

Betty was a special person in the Main English Office, and for me she was friend, counselor, refuge. Her help, her encouragement, her support made things easier for everyone. Though I haven't seen her for many years, she remains a bright memory. The world is a poorer place without her.

I always loved stopping by Betty's office in Old Surge. We didn't talk much about departmental business--she was too discreet for that. Some of our happiest memories were of living in the California desert, when we were young--she was in Barstow, and I was in San Bernardino, a few hours south. We liked to think of ourselves as desert rats, happy survivors of a gone good time.

Betty Fern’s kindness and tremendous decency meant a lot to me during my years at Maryland. At the death of each of my parents, I remember entering her office, closing her door, and talking about how it was a different planet for me. She understood, as she understood many things that mattered to me and others. Tonight I am 8000 miles away from Washington, but I feel Betty’s presence right here. I admired her from the very first, and I miss her now. I know it is a different plant for her family and many who loved her. My sincere sympathy. John Auchard
